Delays to Document Supply / inter-library loan services - Update

The following message from the British Library, the UK's biggest supplier of inter-library loan materials, explains the current delays to the inter-library loan/document supply service.

We are asked to submit requests as usual, but to expect delays. We will keep you informed about your requests, as we have more information.

--------------
As reported in January, access to some of the collection items held at the British Library's Boston Spa site has been affected by the discovery of small traces of asbestos in some areas. All air sampling tests have found there to be no health risk - however, the Library is taking sensible and responsible precautions to ensure the health and safety of Readers, users and staff, in full compliance with the very strict health and safety regulations applying to the management of asbestos. Consequently, some areas of the Boston Spa site have been closed temporarily, leading to unavailability of items.

A major programme of asbestos removal and management is now underway. Although this is expected to last for much of 2011, our priority is to get higher use collection items back in service as quickly as possible, with some of the most heavily-used material now scheduled to be back in use by mid-April.

As an interim solution, we have introduced a number of initiatives to complete customer orders from alternative sources - in particular fulfilling requests from e-journal resources where licences for document supply are held, and making greater use of duplicates in our London stock.

We would ask you to continue placing orders as usual, and you will be informed if you will need to reapply for your requested item at a later date.

Update - Education databases get a new look

An update to the previous post about the new-look education databases. The planned move by JISC of ERIC, the British Education Index and the Australian Education Index to a new platform has now been delayed until 2012. This is to enable them to get the new version up to the required standard.

The applied linguistics database, Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, together with the version of ERIC (CSA) that is on the same platform, will move across during summer 2011.

We will contact all people involved in applied linguistics study, teaching and research, to arrange training in the summer.

Please contact Kate if you have any questions or concerns.

Potential delays to interlibrary loan service

We are currently experiencing a backlog of interlibrary loans. Anyone intending to request material on interlibrary loan should take this into consideration. The delay has been caused by the temporary closure of the British Library's Boston Spa storage facility, after the discovery of small traces of asbestos on site.

The British Library have alternative supply measures in place so that the majority of requests should still be satisfied. However please be aware that some services are unavailable. The disruption is expected to continue throughout 2011.

Where possible, we will try to obtain material from other libraries. So please continue to submit requests, but please bear in mind that it might take us longer than usual to satisfy them. We will keep you informed by email of progress along the way.

Thank you for your patience.

Educational tests - suggestions for purchase

The Education Library has a budget to buy educational tests and instruments for use by students in their research. The tests bought each year are decided by tutors, but often proposed by students. Let us know if there is a test you would like to use this year, and we will try to buy it for the Library.

You can use our Recommend a Resource form or email us at education.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk with your suggestions.

Education databases get a new look

The education databases (ERIC/BEI/AEI) are changing platforms from April 2011 and will have a new look! We will let you know when we have an exact date for the change, and will arrange training sessions for staff and students before the launch of the new version.

Details of training sessions are posted on our website here.
