Training coming up!

The following Bodleian Libraries workshops are coming up in the next 10 days. Please book your places online.

RefWorks for Sciences and Social Sciences [Friday 2 March 9.15 - 12.15] - RefWorks is an online tool which allows you to manage your references, insert them into your work, automatically generate bibliographies and easily switch between citation styles. Research Skills Toolkit [sessions running Tuesday 6 – Thursday 8 March] - Need to brush up on your IT and information skills? Why not come to a Research Skills Toolkit in 8th week? These free 2 hour workshops introduce key software and online tools for your research, hone your searching and information skills and introduce you to subject specialists. Research skills toolkit coming up

A free hands-on workshop for research students. An opportunity for you to learn about a broad range of resources in one time-efficient session.

The 2-hour session focuses on the skills and tools that will streamline your academic work. You will encounter a variety of online tools and services to support your research. Relevant software, online services and library techniques are on offer for you to try out.You will also meet with subject specialists for help and guidance on further training.

These workshops are open to graduate researchers in the Social Sciences Division, in week 8 of Hilary Term.

Upgrading of the Oxford Nexus email and calendaring service. Please, avoid emailing or amending calendars between 10 pm and 8 am over one night in March (TBA).

Also, changes on 14 and 16 February where no-one will be able to use the service between 7 am and 9 am on 14 February and some people will notice a difference to the service on 16 February.

NEW extended weekend opening, 10am-5pm!

The Education Library will now be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-5. This is an additional 6 hours per week, and is in response to requests from student surveys, committees and other consultations.

These longer hours start Saturday 11th February 2012 and will apply during Hilary and Trinity terms (following PGCE term dates). We hope this will make it easier for those at school in the week to come and use the library.

PRS literature search training

A reminder about literature searching training:

1. For those who came to the Literature Review Workshop in November:

Today (Thursday) afternoon, Working with the literature 2-4pm, Seminar Room J. This session is a follow-on from the November workshop, and will look at more advanced subject searching, searching inter-disciplinary resources, setting up alerts for new literature, and tracing the impact of research. The session will be very much guided by you and your own research topics and interests, so please do bring along your research questions and any problems/questions you may have.

2. For those who couldn't make the session in November:

"Resources for research" workshop on Effective search strategies, Wednesday 25th January (repeated Thursday 16th February), 9.30-12.30, IT Training Room, Social Science Library, Manor Road. This session will look at the literature search process as a whole, from building an effective search strategy to searching a wide range of resources, saving your searches, creating alerts and tracing research impact. Please bring your research question with you.

I hope to see you all at one or other (or both!) of these sessions.

Vacation loans and opening hours

As the vacation is fast approaching, here is some information on vacation borrowing and opening hours for the Bodleian Education Library:

1. Vacation loans:

All staff and higher degree students:
From Thursday 1st December 2011 (Wk 8, Michaelmas Term 11)
Due back Tuesday 17th January 2012 (Wk 1, Hilary Term 12)

All PGCE students:
From Thursday 8th December 2011 (last week of term)
Due back Thursday 5th January 2012 (first week of term)

The above applies to all normal loan books.

All overnight material will remain overnight until Thursday 22nd December 2011. It can then be borrowed until Wednesday 4th January 2012.

2. Opening hours:

The library will close for Christmas on Friday 23rd December at 17.30, and will re-open on Tuesday 3rd January at 08.30.

Vacation hours are from Friday 9th December to Friday 23rd December, and are:Monday to Friday 09.00-17.30.

Term-time hours will resume when we open on January 3rd 2012.

New education database platform! Training for staff and DPhils

Thursday 24th November, from 2.45-3.45pm, in the Common Room

You may already know that the main education and applied linguistics subject databases (including ERIC, British Education Index and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts) are moving to a new platform. The databases are already available on the new Proquest platforms (via OxLIP+), and the old Dialog/CSA platforms are due to be switched off on 30th November.

We are holding a session on Thursday 24th November, from 2.45-3.45pm, in the Common Room, to show you how the new platform works and to answer any questions.

Tea and cake will be provided!

We will cover:
* How best to search the new platform
* How to use the thesaurus to search by subject
* How to save your searches and results
* How to set up alerts for new publications
* How to export results to reference management software
... and any other questions

WISER training sessions: Copyright and theses, and Getting organised on the web

Bodleian Libraries will be running the following classes during week 7:

WISER: Your thesis, copyright and ORA (Monday 21 November 9.30 - 10.30am and repeated Friday 25 November 12.30 - 13.30pm) - Oxford DPhil students are required to deposit a copy of their thesis in ORA (Oxford University Research Archive). This session will focus on copyright and other issues that DPhil students need to take into account when preparing and writing their thesis so that they do not encounter problems when they deposit. DPhils are encouraged to attend this session early so that they can make sensible decisions regarding rights from the start of their research. > book your place.

WISER: Getting organised on the web (Monday 21 November 10.45 - 12.15pm) - This session will look at some tools that can help you organise yourself on the web, including social bookmarking services like delicious.com, bibliophile sites like LibraryThing and My WorldCat, RSS feeds and readers, and customised start pages. >book your place.

WISER Skills workshops

Forthcoming WISER workshops for images in teaching and learning, and finding books on SOLO (for those who would like a refresher!)

ARTstor and Bridgeman: Using images in teaching and learning (Thursday, 27 October 2.00-3.00) - This introductory session examines two major digital image collections subscribed to by the University - ARTstor and Bridgeman Education - geared to research and teaching in the humanities, history of science and medicine, and social sciences. Viewing, presenting and managing images are also covered. The focus of this session will be on images for Medieval & Modern Languages, but members of other faculties are welcome to attend. Please note that this session will not include hands on. This session will take place at the Taylor Institution, Room 10b. There is no need to book - please just turn up.

WISER Finding Stuff - Books etc on SOLO (Friday 28 October 9.30-10.30 and repeated Monday 14 November 10.00-10.45). This session introduces SOLO for searching Oxford Libraries and focuses on effective ways of searching SOLO for books, journal titles and other library materials in print and online. It also includes placing "hold requests" for materials in the remote store / bookstacks and for items which are out to other readers, how to use your SOLO "MyAccount" for book renewals and other administration and using the SOLO e-shelf and alerts. Teacher planners for sale

The Library has a stock of 2011-12 Teacher Planners for sale. These secondary school planners have spaces for lesson plans, homework assignments, assemblies, after school activities etc. They cost £6.00 for A4, £5.50 for A5. Just ask at the reception/library desk.

The new SOLO - updates and more info

Have you been experiencing problems with the new SOLO? There have been some service updates to do with resetting passwords, renewals, and the visibility of requested items at reading room locations. Any new updates are posted on the Bodleian Libraries Notices page.

Need help using SOLO?

WISER: Finding Stuff on SOLO –
This hands on workshop will focus on search techniques for finding books, journals and other Library materials in print and online using SOLO. The session will also cover placing requests and reservations using SOLO, book renewals and using the SOLO e-shelf and saved searches.

Dates: This workshop will run on the following dates (you only need to attend one session).
Wednesday 27 July 9.30-10.30 at the Radcliffe Science Library
Tuesday 9 August 14.30-15.30 at the Social Science Library
Wednesday 24 August 10.00-11.00 at the Radcliffe Science Library

Update - library system downtime

The transition to the new system has taken longer than expected, due to an unexpected crash in the previous system just days before the migration of data was due to take place! This means that access to the new system is due to be fully functional from 9am Friday 22nd July, and not Monday 18th, as hoped.

SOLO, which remains currently available for searching, will also be unavailable from 3pm on Thursday 21st until 9am Friday 22nd July.

If you need help finding any library materials, please do ask any of us in the library and we will do our best to help!

Service disruptions until 18th July & changes to SOLO

The Bodleian Libraries have been preparing to move to a new library system. The move will take place over the next week, with some services becoming unavailable until Monday 18th July. On 18th July SOLO will feature some enhanced functionality, as well as changes to the way that users sign in to renew books, place stack requests etc.

Summer vacation loans and opening times

Summer vacation loans

MSc students, DPhil students and staff: all normal loan books can now be borrowed or renewed until 11th October (week 1, Michaelmas term).

**All overnight books remain overnight during the summer vacation**


Summer vacation opening hours

The library will close at 17:30 on Friday 1st July.

From Saturday 2nd July – Sunday 11th September our opening times are:

Monday – Friday - Open 9:00 – 17:30

Saturday and Sunday - Closed


Normal opening times resume on Monday 19th September 2011.
