17th July - University Network Maintenance
Due to maintenance work carried out by the Oxford University Computing Services, the Education Library will lose its network connectivity for a short period early in the morning on 17th July 2012.

Please note that on Wednesday 15th August the network will be out of
action within the Education Department due to the replacement of IT
networking hardware. This will
mean that all the library systems will be affected and you will be unable to access the internet from the library computers.

Disruptions of PCAS in the Educaton Library
During the summer, there will be some disruptions with PCAS system in the Education Library due to the upgrade of Oxford University Computing Services. Not only printing but copying, scanning and Webpay will be affected.
Please note,
the PCAS system will be down on the following dates, but should be back up and running by 11.30am:
17th July 2012 – remote service
(PrinterOn and Webpay) will work fine
7th August 2012 – no aspect of PCAS will
work including remote access services such as PrinterOn and Webpay
9th August 2012 – no aspect of PCAS will
work including remote access services such as PrinterOn and Webpay

If you are about to finish your time at Oxford University, don’t forget to use up your PCAS credit.
We can transfer credit to another PCAS account if requested. We cannot give refunds except in exceptional circumstances.
Please email pcas@bodleian.ox.ac.uk
Your PCAS account will only close after 2 years of inactivity (unless you specifically request it), so if you will be coming back you can use your credit at a later date. However, it can also be used to pay for Bodleian Library Postal Photocopying orders that can be requested by anyone, from anywhere in the world.

Vacation loans and opening hours
Here are the details of loan periods and opening hours for the Easter vacation:
1. Vacation loans:
All staff, DPhil and MSc students:
From Thursday 8th March 2012 (Wk 8, Hilary Term)
Due back Tuesday 24th April 2012 (Wk 1, Trinity Term)
All PGCE students:
From Thursday 29th March 2012 (last week of PGCE term)
Due back Tuesday 17th April 2012 (first week of PGCE term)
The above applies to all normal loan books. All overnight material will remain overnight for the duration of the vacation, with the exception of the closed period over the Easter weekend, when it may be borrowed.

Upgrading of the Oxford Nexus email and calendaring service. Please, avoid emailing or amending calendars between 10 pm and 8 am over one night in March (TBA).
Also, changes on 14 and 16 February where no-one will be able to use the service between 7 am and 9 am on 14 February and some people will notice a difference to the service on 16 February.

NEW extended weekend opening, 10am-5pm!
The Education Library will now be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-5. This is an additional 6 hours per week, and is in response to requests from student surveys, committees and other consultations.
These longer hours start Saturday 11th February 2012 and will apply during Hilary and Trinity terms (following PGCE term dates). We hope this will make it easier for those at school in the week to come and use the library.

PRS literature search training
A reminder about literature searching training:
1. For those who came to the Literature Review Workshop in November:
Today (Thursday) afternoon, Working with the literature 2-4pm, Seminar Room J. This session is a follow-on from the November workshop, and will look at more advanced subject searching, searching inter-disciplinary resources, setting up alerts for new literature, and tracing the impact of research. The session will be very much guided by you and your own research topics and interests, so please do bring along your research questions and any problems/questions you may have.
2. For those who couldn't make the session in November:
"Resources for research" workshop on Effective search strategies, Wednesday 25th January (repeated Thursday 16th February), 9.30-12.30, IT Training Room, Social Science Library, Manor Road. This session will look at the literature search process as a whole, from building an effective search strategy to searching a wide range of resources, saving your searches, creating alerts and tracing research impact. Please bring your research question with you.
I hope to see you all at one or other (or both!) of these sessions.
